What People Are Saying!

Working with people and athletes is what I do, and hearing what they have to say is important. Scroll through to see what everyone is saying about their experience.

"Working with Alex over the past few years has changed how I think, not just how I climb.  Alex is insightful and perceptive about the mental challenges climbers face, and he brings a real climber's perspective to sports psychology.   He also approaches these sessions with a very open mind and non-judgmental spirit that puts his clients at ease and makes them feel heard and understood.  Our coaching sessions have helped me develop a practical toolkit of techniques that I use both on and off the wall.   Every session, I leave with new insights into how to improve my focus, how to discern helpful thoughts from unhelpful ones, how to define my values and live according to those values, and how to be curious about the whole climbing process.  More than once, I've come away with a perspective that has completely shifted how I approach a problem and how I view myself in relation to climbing.   My climbing mindset has improved, but the bigger surprise has been how much the same tools carry over into the rest of my life."

"Alex is caring, compassionate, and very insightful. He listens carefully to everything I say and always has actionable suggestions, some of which I think helped me send my hardest route last year. I really feel like he's in my corner and he helps me to both normalize and reframe my mindset struggles. I always come out of the sessions with valuable ideas and things to work on. I'd recommend him to anyone."

"Working with Alex Bridgewater helped me clarify my motivations for climbing and better understand the specific aspects of the sport I appreciate. His guidance to journal more consistently has been a useful tool, and our sessions gave me practical strategies for tapping into a deeper focus on hard sport climbs. I’d recommend him to any climber looking to build a more deliberate mental approach."

"I have done coaching and sports psychology sessions in the past with moderate success, but it quickly became clear that working with Alex would be different. Alex genuinely puts in the effort to understand the person behind the performance, making sure you leave each session with actionable tools and insights. He explains concepts in a personal way while sharing his assessments honestly and kindly. I highly recommend working with Alex."

"Working with Alex has been one of the most impactful parts of my recovery journey. After my injury, I struggled with recurring dreams about my accident and frequent visual flashbacks that made it difficult to move forward. Alex helped me realize that my injury does not define who I am as an athlete or as a person.

Through our work together, Alex taught me how to acknowledge difficult thoughts and emotions without letting them control me. One concept that especially resonated with me was learning to “drop my anchor into the current”—staying grounded in the present, even when challenges arise. This approach has given me tools to navigate setbacks while continuing to move forward.

Most importantly, Alex helped me see the best in both my body and my mind. Instead of focusing on limitations, I learned to recognize my strengths and trust myself again. Because of Alex’s guidance, I have developed a healthier mindset, greater confidence, and a stronger belief in my ability to perform at my best. I am incredibly grateful for the support, perspective, and skills Alex has provided throughout this process."

"Alex was instrumental in helping me through a strange period of recurring injury. But beyond the acute treatment, I was surprised to concretely learn tools that have helped me in my life. I employ these tools in all areas of my life, be it in relationships, my professional career and climbing. You can learn how to show up prepared physically AND mentally."

"I’ve worked with Alex for about 5 years now and every year I have seen improvement. Last year was the strongest I have been in 10 years of climbing, which is significant for someone in mid-50s. I would also say my body has been the most resilient ever (knock on wood). In addition to improving climbing strength training, Alex has helped me significantly with the mental game of tactics, timing, mindset, etc. For most people this can be a faster means of improvement, compared to hard to come by strength gains. The training plans (strength, finger boarding, climbing) from Alex constantly surprise me and keep the motivation high. I read lots of training articles / listen to podcasts and sometimes I think I have training figured out – but you don’t know what you don’t know – so getting training recommendations from someone like Alex that sees lots of athletes is worth it. Lastly, and this should not be underappreciated, is that he has helped me a lot with life outside of climbing giving me habits, advice, and homework to help me deal with the challenges of life that come with family, work and relationships. If your life is balanced and you are in a good place mentally, you are giving your climbing the best chance of success."

Female, Runner

"In just 2 short weeks of working with Alex, I've made progress in helping my brain unhook the unhelpful thoughts it was tightly wrapped around. Rather than feeling stuck in a cycle of anxiety & stress, I'm enjoying running, time with my family and generally feeling more pleasant! The tools he's teaching me are making a real and immediate impact. While I still have more work to do and a significant surgery & recovery on the horizon, I feel supported to move through what's coming my way, enjoy what I love and bring my best to what I do."
